The place of the Cross of Christ is fundamental to Catholic teaching on salvation, which falls under the branch of theology known as eschatology, i.e. the studies about the last things (death, judgment, heaven, purgatory, hell, reward, punishment). The cross in all its ramification is identified with salvation, which has to do with a repurchase, a reconciliation of two parties that were hitherto estranged to each other (God and humanity). Through the cross humanity was restored to its lost position in God. Thus the language of the Cross becomes the language of empowerment, through faith in the crucified messiah.
